Strength

It is not always easy to hold your arms up.  Moses during the battle between the Israelites and the Amalekites grew very tired after holding his hands in the air.  Each time his arms droped the Amalekites would begin to gain the advantage.  Aaron and Hur seeing that Moses's strength was fading fast stepped in and held his arms up.  I was reminded by a friend yesterday that at times we are called to hold our brothers arms up.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Exodus 17:9-13
The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.  Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”
So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.  As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning.  When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.   So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

  1. I really like this drawing, Patrick. During a particularly difficult time in my life, I came home to find a gift on my door post, placed there by a friend with nothing more than the words "Aaron and Hur" placed inside a picture frame. It was a very simple reminder that I was not alone, because I had people lifting me in prayer. Thanks for this post :-)

  4. Thx. Debbie. Every time I look at it I think of the effort that Moses must have exerted trying to keep his arms in the air.
